“Thalassologia” Cinema Cycle – “Nyad” (2023)

13 January, 2025

As the title suggests, the thematic line of this cycle was linked to the Blue Humanities, the field of Humanities that studies the relationship between human beings and their culture and water. Specifically, this cycle looked at representations of the oceans and maritime exploration/research in Seventh Art.

The first session was dedicated to the film Nyad (2023), directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhely, based on the true story of Diana Nyad, an athlete who wanted to swim across open water from Cuba to the Floridian coast.

The session was held at Casa Comum, on 11 November, 2024.

(The JRAAS team and the Digital Lab presented their latest film cycle, entitled “Thalassologia: The Blue Humanities in Film”.)
