The final film in the JRAAS Cinema Cycle ‘Thalassologia: The Blue Humanities in Film’ was Peter Weir’s “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), which chronicles a British ship’s hunt for a formidable French war vessel around the coast of South America during the Napoleonic Wars. With a foreword by Professor Inês Amorim (FLUP), the film’s representation of the ocean as a vessel both for scientific endeavors and large-scale human conflicts was explored.
The screening took place at the Instituto Pernambuco – Porto, Wednesday, 11 December, 2024.
