Kathleen Calado was born and raised in the south of England. She has a degree in Hispanic Studies from Bristol University. After graduating, in 1976, she taught English in Valladolid, Spain. She moved to Portugal in 1977, where she taught English language and culture at the Universities of Porto and Coimbra. In 1983, she moved with her family to São Miguel, where she has continued as an English language teacher at the University of the Azores. She has pursued her interest in the English language and British culture, history and literature, and also translation and interpreting. At present she is teaching English language to undergraduate students of Tourism, and Interpreting to students taking a Master’s Degree in Translation. Her research has resulted in papers and articles related to the above-mentioned fields of interest, with a particular focus on the life and work of Edward Jenkins (1838-1910) and Ramalho Ortigão’s translation of Jenkins’ satire Ginx’s Baby.
