Margarida Morgado

Castelo Branco Polytechnic University
E-mail: marg.morgado@ipcb.pt

Margarida Morgado completed her Master and PhD degrees in English Literature at the University of Lisbon, Portugal and has since worked as a teacher educator and ESP teacher at Castelo Branco Polytechnic University (IPCB), where she is Coordinating Professor of English Cultural Studies.

She is the director of IPCB’s Language Centre, CILCE, and Head of the Human and Social Sciences Department at Escola Superior de Educação (Faculty of Education) of IPCB (2023-2025).

Professional development for HE teachers

Margarida Morgado collaborated with Higher Education ESP teachers in the development of a national project, carried out under the framework of the Higher Education Language Centres Association (ReCles.pt), that experimented with CLIL training Higher Education content and foreign language teachers in HE Polytechnic Institutes. This practically-oriented pedagogic project resulted in the collaborative writing of a training manual (CLIL Training Guide: creating a CLIL learning community in higher education, 2015) to support training courses for the professional development of HE content and language teachers, which have been running since 2015 in several HEIs either as face-to-face or blended learning.

In the Working CLIL strand she co-developed a Small Private Online Course (SPOC) on CLIL in Higher Education, available as open educational resource at https://cursos-breves.ipcb.pt/ .

Experimenting with Adjunct CLIL in the HE context

As coordinator of all English course programmes at IPCB (Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco) where she works, Margarida Morgado coordinated a 3-year pilot project on Adjunct CLIL in Higher Education. The project involved two HE lecturers, combined ESP and Industrial Engineering content and was developed from 2015 to 2018. The outcomes of this pilot are documented by several papers published in national and international journals by all teachers involved.

Professional development for school teachers

As partner in several EU-funded European projects connected to CLIL and teacher education, such as CLIL for CHILDREN (http://www.clil4children.eu/ ) and CLIL FOR YOUNG EUROPEAN CITIZENS (https://clil4yec.eu), she taught workshops and seminars (both face to face and online) on CLIL for primary education teachers in Portugal and Europe.

She also participated in the creation of online CLIL courses and the publication of lesson plans for primary schools as OERs, as well as teacher guidelines to support school teachers with a comprehensive training program for CLIL.

Content developer for courses in HE

As partner in several EU-funded projects, Margarida Morgado developed modules and units that integrate content, language and skills development for an international EU-funded project, INCOLLAB – Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching: Collaborative Approaches (https://incollabeu.wixsite.com/project/about), which supports ICLHE and EMI in higher education. The OERs were piloted across European institutions.

In the Working CLIL strand she co-developed a Small Private Online Course (SPOC) on CLIL in Higher Education, available as open educational resource at https://cursos-breves.ipcb.pt/ .

Networking in the area of language teaching

Margarida Morgado is co-founder of the Portuguese Association of Higher Education Language Centres, ReCLes.pt (www.recles.pt), of which she is a member. This network disseminates foreign language teaching related content and events.

She is part of the COST (CA21114) CLIL Network for Languages in Education: Towards bi- and multilingual disciplinary literacies  (CLILnetLE).

Applied research to education

Margarida Morgado has coordinated and participated in many international applied research projects in the areas of Foreign Language Learning and Teaching, Reading, Storytelling, and Intercultural Education. She has wide expertise in international European projects on all these research areas (i.e. EPBC and ESET, BARFIE, EDMReporter, EUMOF, ALPHAEU, SCHOOL SAFETY NET, BOYS’ READING, AQUA NARRABILIS, WE ARE EUROPE, IDPBC, ICCAGE, LIRE 2.0, e-MYSTERIES, LEARN TO CHANGE).

European Policy Experimentation

She has been involved in two European Policy Experiment projects on Telecollaboration and/or Virtual exchanges with impact on teacher education in Europe:

  • (2017-2019) EVALUATE – Evaluating and Upscaling Telecollaborative Teacher Education (582934-EPP-1-2016-2-ES-EPPKA3-PI-POLICY).
  • (2021-2024) VALIANT – Virtual Innovation and Support Networks (626134‐EPP‐1‐2020‐2‐ES‐EPPKA3‐PI‐POLICY)

External evaluator

Margarida Morgado has acted as external evaluator for research projects in the Humanities and Social Sciences area for the European Science Foundation (ESF) and she has acted as peer reviewer for the following journals: EJTE European Journal of Teacher Education, Educare/Educere, Children’s Literature in English Language Education (e-journal) and the CERCLES International Journal, Language Learning in Higher Education, the Journal of the Confederation of Language Centres in Higher Education.

She has been on the scientific committee and organization of several International conferences, such as those of the “Red de Universidades Lectoras”, jointly with Iberian and South-American universities, and those of the “Culture and Power” series with the University of Lisbon and several other Portuguese institutions, as well as on the above-mentioned project international conferences.
