Maria Ellison | University of Porto Working CLIL coordinator
Maria Ellison is Assistant Professor of didactics of languages at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP). She holds a degree in primary education (Univ. Bath Spa), an MA in TESOL (Univ. Manchester) and a Ph.D in didactics of languages (FLUP). She teaches didactics for English language teaching, English for Specific Purposes, English for Academic Purposes and CLIL at FLUP. She also coordinates ELT seminars and supervises student teachers who are conducting their teaching practice in primary and secondary schools in and around Porto. She has been involved in integrated approaches to teaching since she began her career as a primary generalist teacher in the UK in the mid 1980s. She has been actively engaged in teacher education for CLIL in Portugal since 2005 through the STEPS-UP project (Support for Teaching English in Primary Schools 2005 – 2009) which was the recipient of the European Language Label award (Selo Europeu) in 2008 and Label of Label awards in 2012 for its fostering of CLIL practices in primary schools in Porto. She was also the pedagogic coordinator for Higher STEPS which supports the development of English language and integration of academic content of teachers across faculties of the University of Porto. She is external advisor of the GoCLIL project at Escola Secundária Dr Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves, Valadares. She runs in-service teacher development courses on CLIL and teaches a curricular course on CLIL on the Masters in Teaching English in primary schools. She has published and presented many papers about CLIL in Portugal and abroad.Her doctoral thesis focused on CLIL as a Catalyst for Developing Reflective Practice in Foreign Language Teacher Education.
António Lopes | University of the Algarve
António Lopes is Professor of English Studies at the School of Education and Communication, University of Algarve, where he teaches English language, literature and culture, and ELT. He is currently the director of the master’s degree in the Teaching of Portuguese and English in Basic Education. He is a member of CETAPS, where he has been working with several research groups, including Teaching of English and Applied Language Studies (TEALS). He has also participated in a number of European-funded projects in the areas of ELT and ICT. He is the international coordinator of the European-funded project PETALL (Pan European Task-based Activities for Language Learning; http://petallproject.eu). His publications include New Trends in Language Teaching: methods, evaluation, training (edited by Lopes, António and Raúl Ruiz-Cecilia. Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2018) and Current Issues in Language Teaching: Innovating Approaches (edited by Ruiz-Cecilia, Raúl and António Lopes. Carlos Ceia | Nova University, Lisbon
Carlos Ceia is Full Professor of English Studies at Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon – Portugal. He holds a PhD in Hispanic Studies from Cardiff University and has been teaching at Nova University since 1993. Founder and head of the Language Institute of the NOVA University of Lisbon (ILNOVA), coordinator of the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS), and coordinator of the PhD in Languages Teaching and the general coordinator of the pre-service teaching education courses at NOVA FCSH. He teaches in different areas from English Contemporary Literature and Literary Theory and Teaching to Curricular Development and Theory.
Fátima Vieira | University of Porto
Fátima Vieira is Associate Professor (with “Agregação”) at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, where she has been teaching since 1986. She has got her Doctoral degree in 1998, with a thesis on William Morris and the British Utopian Literary tradition. She was the Chair of the Utopian Studies Society / Europe from 2006 to 2016. She is the Coordinator of the University of Porto’s branch of CETAPS – Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies, where she is the leader of the research project “Mapping Dreams: British and North-American Utopianism”. She has also collaborated with ILC – The Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa since 2000, where she has coordinated research projects on Portuguese Utopianism. She is currently the coordinator of the research project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology “Utopia, Food and the Future: Utopian Thinking and the Construction of Inclusive Societies – a Contribution from the Humanities”, jointly promoted by ILC and CETAPS.
Margarida Coelho | Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre
Margarida Coelho, MA in English Language and Culture at the University of Lisbon, is currently a PhD researcher at the University of Extremadura, Spain. She is a senior lecturer at the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (IPP), where she teaches Business English and Technical English. She is a member of the Technical-Scientific Board of ESTG, a member of the Group for “Internationalization and Interinstitutional Collaboration with the Community” (ICIC), at IPP and the Institute’s official representative to the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Language Centres Association (ReCLes.pt). Coordinator of the Languages and Culture Centre (CLiC) of the Institute from 2010 to 2015, she has been extensively involved in the promotion of language(s) learning among the students of the Institute and in the community. She has participated in the organization of a number of Erasmus Intensive Programmes at IPP and has taken part in several ERASMUS and Study Visits mobility exchanges. Researcher in C3i – Interdisciplinary Coordination Center for Research and Innovation at IPP; collaborator in the CLIL research team of ReCLes.pt (Associação de Redes dos Centros de Línguas do Ensino Superior em Portugal), she is developing her research in the areas of English language teaching & methodologies, particularly CLIL at tertiary level.
Margarida Morgado | Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco
Margarida Morgado collaborated with other English teachers in the development of a national project carried out under the framework of the Higher Education Language Centres Association (ReCles.pt) of experimenting with training Higher Education teachers for CLIL in HE Polytechnic Institutes. This practically-oriented pedagogic project resulted in the collaborative writing of a training manual (CLIL Training Guide: creating a CLIL learning community in higher education, 2015) to support training courses for the professional development of HE content and language teachers, which have been running since then in several HEIs either as face-to-face or blended learning. At IPCB (Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco) where she works, a 3-year pilot combining ESP and Industrial Engineering content has been developed as adjunct CLIL, which is documented by several papers published in national and international journals. Since 2015 she is also involved in a EU-funded European project called CLIL for CHILDREN (http://www.clil4children.eu/ ), which aims at supporting primary school teachers with a comprehensive training program for CLIL teaching. This project is funded until August 2018.
María del Carmen Arau Ribeiro | Polytechnic Institute of Guarda
María’s PhD (2011) on metalinguistics, writing and constructive error perception commemorated 20 years in Europe. Her undergrad work in French and Contemporary International Relations (UC Berkeley 1984-88) included an honor’s thesis on immigrant language education in the California Community Colleges while her Master’s in Applied Linguistics (UC Davis 1989-1991) was based on further work with the California Department of Education. Teaching at UC Davis, in Madrid, and Oporto preceded her current work at the School of Technology and Management at the Polytechnic Instituto of Guarda. She has presided over Aprolínguas (2004-2014) and currently the Network Association of Language Centers in Portuguese HE (ReCLes.pt, 2009-present). An expert consultant for the DAAD in Germany on HE (2015-2018), she also participates on the coordinating council of the European Association of Language Centers in HE (CercleS, 2010-present). Publications in language learning and teaching practice, CLILing, language policy, interculturality, divergent thinking, interdisciplinarity, and metacognition.
