Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an educational approach which provides enriched, innovative educational experiences through the combined teaching of subject content with an additional language which enhances the learning of both and brings benefits to all involved. CLIL is practiced under many guises in various contexts across the world and is particularly prolific in Europe. This research strand recognises the recent growth of CLIL across school levels in Portugal (see Eurydice Report: Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe 2017) and English Medium Instruction (EMI) and Integrating Content and Language practices in Higher Education (ICLHE) all of which necessitate support/teacher education and examination of the phenomenon in order to provide for a stronger research base in the national context.
This strand acknowledges the concentration of CLIL researchers, practitioners and teacher educators within TEALS who are actively engaged in CLIL (through national, international/European projects; conference presentations; scientific production – training guides, chapter/article publications, and have qualifications within this area at PhD level).
to become a nationally- and internationally-recognised CLIL research group
to conduct evidence-based research and longitudinal studies across educational levels
to foster research and other partnerships between faculty and schools within and beyond the Portuguese national context in order to develop practitioner inquiry and teacher education practices
to develop a nationwide network of CLIL researchers
to develop/support a nationwide network of schools engaged in CLIL in Portugal
to provide support for CLIL across educational levels in Portugal (through teacher education programmes; conferences; external coordination of CLIL projects in schools including teacher observation; development of materials for CLIL)
to host and support other CLIL researchers through research stays at TEALS member institutions
to develop a JRAAS strand which incorporates CLIL
