The Anglophone Cultures and History Research Area was formed in November 2017 following the inclusion of a new strand: “American Intersections”. Until then the area was entitled “British Culture and History” and was devoted to the study of the relationships between Literature, Culture and the Media in a British context only. Now divided into three complementary strands, the new research area will continue to develop the work started in 2010, now divided into three complementary strands:  Research Strand A) Science and Culture (convener: Gabriela Gândara Terenas) will address and foster the examination of the many and varied links between Science and the Humanities from an intercultural perspective. Confronting and comparing scientific and humanistic discourses, this research strand will study the different strategies employed in the representation, dissemination and popularization of Science, particularly in fictional narratives and also in the Arts, attempting, in this way, to establish how far the comparison of different forms of discursivity contribute towards the study of the History of Science, Visual Culture and Literature in Anglophone countries. The fundamental aim of Research Strand B) Literature and the Media (convener Maria do Rosário Lupi Bello) is to study the relationship between Literature and different forms of contemporary media, namely Television, Cinema and new media. This implies the development of different fields of research, such as: the role played by a set of television series produced by BBC as strong canonical propagators of Anglophone cultures; the importance of Television, in general, as a propagator of Anglophone Literature and Cinema; the role of transmedia storytelling to diverse audiences within Anglophone cultures, viewed as the representation of different storyworlds through multiple media. Researchers will approach selected texts ranging from traditional literature to contemporary media, including novels, short stories, plays, films, television productions, graphic novels and digital literature, as interconnected arenas of human experience and culture. Finally, Research Strand C) American Intersections (convener: Teresa Botelho) aims to advance the understanding of cultural realities in the United States from a broad thematic and interdisciplinary perspective, examining how questions of place, identity and transnational interdependencies intersect in the mapping of ever-changing and multilayered American imaginary.
